The brief

An imaginary small firm keeps its money in three places and its overview in a spreadsheet. It wants one screen that tells the owner where the business stands.

The challenge

Most dashboards show numbers and stop. The owner then has to work out what matters. A screen that people open weekly has to answer one question: what do I do next?

The approach

RUNWAY 14 wks NEXT ACTIONS NEXT 12 WEEKS
Concept screen: dashboard, with sample layout and no real data.
  1. Callout one: the runway.

One figure leads the page: how many weeks the business can run at its current pace. Everything else is smaller.

  2. Callout two: the next actions.

A short list under it: invoices to chase, bills due this week. Each item has one button.

  3. Callout three: the forecast strip.

The next twelve weeks on a single line, so a shortfall is visible before it arrives.

Design targets

  • Aim: the next action is visible without scrolling.

  • Aim: one primary figure per screen, so nothing competes with it.

  • Aim: every chart has a plain sentence that says what it means.
